Alex Flynn is a freelance photojournalist based in New York City. He spent seven years in the Army, first as an infantryman before making a move to the combat correspondent career field. In 2013 and 2014 he deployed to Afghanistan as a photographer, where he documented soldiers conducting some of last combat operations of the war. In 2016, he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, and medically retired from the Army.
He is interested in healthcare issues, countering ableism, and the individual processes of unlearning violence.
He is an alumnus of the Eddie Adams Workshop and is listed by Getty Reportage Emerging Talent.
